City Mouse or Country Mouse
What kind of life do I want to live?
At times the life I seek feels completely incompatible with the culture around me.
I want a slower life. A smaller economy. Money that stays within the community as much as possible.
I want time to enjoy the mundane parts of life. I believe I could find joy in the mundane if I did not feel the pressures to compete with everyone else around me at all times.
I don’t want to feel the pressure of big businesses digging their teeth into my life. I don’t want to compete with people who make global money. Someone working a job that serves their local economy can never compete with fully scaled businesses.
Am I unambitious? No, I am ambitious and I always have been. I want to work hard and contribute to my community. I want to serve people. Many of these big companies that drive competition in all aspects of our lives… I feel they are sucking a little bit of magic out of the world. Stealing local magic away from communities.
I don’t want to scale! I don’t want to scale! I want to run a sustainable business that brings at least a little bit of joy to the people around me!
And maybe I don’t want to compete in an environment that encourages stepping on other people to raise yourself up. I don’t want to work in an environment that fails to create joyful and meaningful experiences for the population.
I don’t want to live in a battle royale!
But the battle royale closes in on us eventually.
Do you prefer the city mouse or the country mouse?
The moment the country mouse feels safest and most secure, is the perfect time to consume it. That which would eat the city mouse will come to eat you too.
